A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF SHEPPEY
The idea behind this project was to capture a year in the life of the Isle of Sheppey and present 365 photographs, one for each day of 2011, taken by a team of volunteer photographers. The project will represent Sheppey today showing the different views, styles and feelings that each photographer brings to the project. Photographs feature people and places as seen by the people who live or work on the island. The project captures some of its hidden aspects too, activities that not everyone notices or gets a chance to see. The images will create a diary for today and a record for the future.
Sheppey’s name means Island of Sheep and for many centuries, the only access was via Kings, Hearty or other ferries. Nowadays the ionic Sheppey Crossing towers above the Sheppey marshlands, connecting the island to Kent’s mainland. Sheppey is an island of many different contrasts, offering spectacular landscapes within settings which are dramatic and unique. This small island measures only nine miles and yet offers a plethora of opportunities for exploration. The towns and villages which are scattered through out, shelter centuries of rich maritime and aviation histories; the nature reserves and wildlife habitats constantly attract new visitors.
